जब सूर्य सिर के ठीक ऊपर होता है तो सूर्य से आने वाला प्रकाश अपेक्षाकृत कम दूरी चलता है। दोपहर के समय सूर्य श्वेत प्रतीत होता है क्योंकि नीले तथा बैंगनी वर्ण का बहुत थोड़ा भाग ही प्रकीर्ण हो पाता है। सूर्योदय के समय सूर्य श्रेतिजीय  अवस्थामें होता है। इस समय सूर्य से आने वाला प्रकाश हमारे नेत्रों तक पहुंचने से पहले पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में वायु की मोटी परतों से होकर गुजरता है। क्षितिज के समीप नीले तथा कम तरंग धैर्य के प्रकाश का अधिकांश भाग गणों द्वारा प्रकीर्ण हो जाता है। इसीलिए हमारे नेत्रों तक पहुंचने वाला प्रकाश अधिक तरंग धैर्य का होता है इससे सूर्य सूर्यास्त के समय लाल रंग का प्रतीत होता है।
